Comment of the week: TERS closure a ‘devastating blow’

Industry was reeling after news that the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) Temporary Employee Relief Scheme would not continue past September 15 – despite President Cyril Ramaphosa stating it would continue until the end of the National State of Disaster.

This sparked quite a few comments.

Gail Grimbeck Dalton of Knysna Manor House wrote:

“I was devastated on Saturday to log on to the TERS site to find out that they had closed all applications the day before. I have had a huge problem with verifying company details, and only received an email this morning that all is now correct.

I have hundreds of emails trying to get this matter sorted since April. Now I see that I cannot even resubmit my claims for the months that I did not get any relief.

The ladies at our guesthouse are still employed but on short time due to the lack of tourists. We also await our BLI pay-out, and are battling to stay open. We need more government support to keep this vital industry open.”

MD of The MICE Academy, Helen Brewer, wrote:

“Oh this is very bad news. There are many that the Academy know are totally reliant on the TERS. This will be a mighty blow as we are all aware that the revival of the tourism industry together with MICE is not likely for quite some time. Please make every attempt to reverse this decision. Wishing many positive thoughts and wishes for success.”
