The Green Tourism Incentive Programme (GTIP), managed by the Industrial Development Corporation on behalf of the Department of Tourism, has extended its deadline for applications to January, 31.
The programme encourages tourism companies to use more renewable resources by reducing input costs and supporting operational sustainability.
Qualifying tourism enterprises can be eligible for the following:
90% of the cost of a new energy-efficiency audit or the full cost of reviewing an existing energy-efficiency audit; and grant funding to qualifying small and micro enterprises on a sliding scale from 30% to 90% - capped at R1 million (€67 000).
The funding will be paid directly to service providers.
The systems covered include solar and wind energy generating operations, solar-based water heating equipment and other devices used in cooking and lighting that are energy-efficient. The audits will be conducted by the National Cleaner Production Centre of SA.
To be eligible, the company needs to be a private, micro, or small enterprise and cater directly for tourists and, if providing accommodation, require a star grading from the Tourism Grading Council of SA. The company cannot waive the audit and needs to be able to cover the rest of the costs not covered by the grant.
To apply, you can download the application form here, complete it and send it along with other supporting documents to gtip@idc.co.za.
