Access to Kruger National Park via Orpen Gate has been suspended following the collapse of a bridge along the R531 near Wits Rural Facility outside the park.
SANParks said the bridge was washed away on April 20, rendering the road inaccessible. Visitors are advised to use alternative entry points, including Paul Kruger and Phalaborwa gates, until further notice.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out at Lower Sabie Rest Camp in the early hours of April 21, affecting the shop and restaurant. SANParks confirmed that rangers and staff contained the fire before it spread to other structures.
No injuries or fatalities were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Guests travelling to Lower Sabie are advised to stock up on supplies before arrival or purchase essentials such as wood and ice at nearby camps including Skukuza, Crocodile Bridge, Satara, Tshokwane and Nkuhlu.
Accommodation at the camp has not been affected and remains fully booked for the upcoming long weekends around April 27 and May 1. Activities, including guided game drives and walks, are continuing as normal.
Although the restaurant did not sustain fire damage, it remains closed due to power cuts caused by the incident. Temporary retail, food and beverage services will be introduced.
SANParks has urged guests to avoid the affected area for safety reasons.
