By utilising a low-volume, high-yield tourism strategy, Rwanda has seen a 21% increase in revenue compared with pre-pandemic earnings, and an almost ten-fold increase in people opting for exclusive trekking.
According to Clare Akamanzi, CEO of the Rwanda Development Board, the country has been focusing on high-yield tourists to recover from the pandemic's effects on the travel and tourism sector.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 17, Akamanzi said the approach of investing its strategy, marketing and promotion at high-yield tourists had worked.
"They want safety, they want cleanliness, they want organisation, they want infrastructure, and we do our best to give them that quality so that they can pay for it.”
She added that the government had been working with renowned conservationists to reintroduce and rehabilitate national parks and diversify the products offered to tourists, with a goal of engaging tourists in other activities and spending longer in the country.
