Iconic family holiday hotel likely to close

Sun International’s Fish River Sun Hotel and Country Club Resort could close at the end of November.

The Fish River Sun Resort in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape, could close its doors at the end of November, after Sun International decided to abandon its appeal against a land claim awarded in 2010.

This comes after a 17-year battle with the EC community.

Dozens of farms and small holdings were being claimed as historic land by the Prudhoe and AmaZizi community. Sun International’s property is on some of the land that is in dispute.

According to a report in the local Talk of the Town over the past number of years the resort had recorded escalating costs and declining revenue in a depressed economic environment‚ with little prospect of financial recovery. The option to sell the resort has been complicated by an outstanding land claim‚ making this option unviable

In a statement, Sun International said that Emfuleni Resorts‚ which forms part of Sun International‚ was negotiating the transfer of the resort to the State as a going concern for the benefit of the local community.

“Should the negotiations fail, Emfuleni will cease operations and close the Fish River Sun Resort by November 30, 2017.”
