Industry welcomes changes at Namibia’s Tourism Protection Unit

Namibia’s tourism sector has applauded a move to place the country’s Tourism Protection Unit (TPU) under the direct control of the Inspector General of the Namibian Police (NAMPOL) to enhance visitor safety efforts.

The Federation of Namibian Tourism Associations (FENATA) said TPU’s placement under the control of Inspector General Joseph Shikongo is a clear demonstration of commitment to reinforcing Namibia’s image as a safe travel destination.

“The tourism sector has been working closely with NAMPOL and law enforcement for many years, giving rise to the establishment of the TPU in the first place, and is therefore delighted to see this unit now elevated to the highest office. This demonstrates recognition by government and NAMPOL of the value of Namibia’s tourism industry and the importance of maintaining a positive image of Namibia,” FENATA’s Executive said in a press statement.

The TPU was formally launched in July 2022, as a specialised division of NAMPOL, to improve visible policing at key tourism sites and strengthen collaboration with the tourism sector.

Shikongo has additionally appointed a new head of the unit – Chief Inspector Christina Van-Dunem Da Fonsech

FENATA has written to Van-Dunem Da Fonsech to reiterate its commitment to collaboration focused on communication, awareness and prompt law enforcement action.
