Mauritius moves towards e-visas

Mauritius has moved a step closer to introducing an e-visa system after the proposal was included in the country’s 2026-2027 budget speech.

The proposal envisages non-citizens applying for an e-visa before travelling to Mauritius with the aim of reducing queues on arrival and strengthening national security. However, it does not specify when the system will be introduced, how it will operate or whether travellers will be charged a fee.

The budget annex also proposes amending the Immigration Act to allow non-citizens to apply for an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) for a prescribed fee before travelling. It is not clear whether the proposed ETA and e-visa are separate systems or different terms for the same process.

The proposals could change the pre-travel requirements for visitors to Mauritius but the budget does not yet provide enough detail to determine how the new system will apply to travellers from visa-exempt countries.
