Namibia is home to some of Africa’s most impressive species: think elephants, think lions, think…chameleons?
In the vast Namibian deserts one can find, if one is lucky enough, the ‘Little Five’, as they are affectionately known. One member of this group is the Chamaeleo namaquensis, or desert chameleon, which hails from the arid, western part of the region, and is particularly common in the Namib Desert. The desert chameleon is one of the largest chameleon species in Southern Africa and can reach a length of up to 25cm.
More importantly, they’re incredibly cute.

Access to the ‘Little 5’ is easiest out of Swakopmund, a picturesque city on the Namibian coastline. Conni Lyners, General Manager of BON Hotel Swakopmund, says her favourite weekend activity is to take her children to explore the dunes. “No two days are the same, with every moment yielding something new and interesting.” She adds that the reaction and smiles from her guests after a trip to the desert never fail to warm her heart.
