Mount Nelson to open new restaurant and suite

Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town will launch Amura by Ángel León in December this year, marking the “Chef of the Sea’s” first restaurant outside Spain and his debut in Africa.

The new restaurant will offer an “immersive marine dining experience” shaped by the Cape coastline and León’s innovative approach to sea-sourced ingredients. Known for introducing species such as phytoplankton and sea rice to haute cuisine, León is the recipient of three Michelin stars for Aponiente, two for Alevante and the Michelin Green Star Award.

“Rooted in heritage and guided by respect for nature, the Mount Nelson and Amura come together in a shared vision: to honour the ocean and celebrate heritage and hospitality with soul,” said Michelin Star Chef Ángel León.

Patrick Fisher, Mount Nelson’s GM, added: “A master of maritime feasting, Amura is his love letter to the ocean. Chef Ángel León brings his vision of sustainability and creativity from Cádiz to Cape Town.”

Designed by South African Interior Architect Tristan du Plessis, the restaurant’s interiors will draw inspiration from Cape Town’s kelp forests, creating a cinematic, marine-inspired atmosphere.

Amura will showcase Spanish culinary traditions fused with South African ingredients and coastal influences. Guests will be able to choose between an à la carte menu or a tasting menu featuring unsung fish species, kelp, wild herbs and fire-cooked dishes.

“Working with local producers and ingredients sourced from the two oceans surrounding the Cape Peninsula has been a revelation,” said León.

Partnership with Thebe Magugu

Alongside Amura, the Mount Nelson will also launch the Thebe Magugu Suite and Magugu House Cape Town. Both projects, also set to open in December, mark South African Fashion Designer Thebe Magugu’s debut in luxury hospitality design.

The suite, set across two floors and created in collaboration with StudioLandt, blends Afro-modernist design with South African cultural elements. Adjoining Magugu House Cape Town will serve as a concept store and cultural hub, showcasing Magugu’s collections and rotating exhibitions by African artists.

“Together, the Mount Nelson and I have crafted a space rooted deeply in place and purpose with a strong commitment to preserving the culture from which we draw inspiration,” said Magugu.

The Thebe Magugu Suite will be part of Belmond’s Signature Suites and Villas. Magugu House Cape Town will open to the public on November 10.
