The Elgin Railway Market has expanded its attractions with the launch of the Platform Escape. Inspired by Elgin’s railway heritage, the Platform Escape rooms incorporate local history into puzzles and storytelling. Designed for groups of friends, families and colleagues, it challenges participants to work together to solve puzzles and uncover clues against the clock.
“Elgin already attracts visitors who want more from a day out than a quick lunch and a stroll through a market,” says Lauren Newcombe Bond, Founder of Platform Escape. “We have built these rooms to reward curiosity. Whether you arrive on the steam train, drive over from Cape Town for the day or live in the valley, you should leave knowing something about this place that you didn’t when you walked in.”
Less than an hour away from Cape Town, Elgin is set within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve and surrounded by apple and pear orchards. The Elgin Railway Market is housed in a 1940s apple warehouse originally built by Italian prisoners of war and now reinvented as a steampunk and art deco-influenced destination.
For the full experience, Ceres Rail Company runs a heritage steam train between Cape Town and Elgin Railway Market on Saturdays and Sundays. It departs from the Foreshore at 08h05 and returns the same afternoon.
