Politicians see job opportunities in tourism

A resolution to recognise the job opportunities in South Africa’s tourism industry was unanimously voted in during South Africa’s opposition party’s federal congress.

The proposal for the resolution was made by the Democratic Alliance’s Shadow Minister of Tourism, Manny de Freitas.

“Although this resolution reinforces our existing policy, I table this resolution as, in some instances, colleagues either don’t encourage or highlight the power of tourism,” said De Freitas.

“This resolution hopes to encourage and remind colleagues, irrespective of whether they’re in opposition or in government, to use tourism as an opportunity for economic development and job creation,” he said, emphasising that many jobs in tourism required very little training.

His proposal was seconded by Member of Parliament from the National Council of Provinces, Sonja Boshoff. “It is imperative that we, as the DA, take it upon ourselves to grow the economy post-COVID-19,” she said, emphasising that the many people who had lost jobs due to the pandemic would need the job opportunities that tourism presented.
