Recif Island officially declared a special reserve

Recif Island, one of the inner island group east of Mahé, has been officially declared a special reserve.

President James Michel has said that Seychelles is committed to preserving the biodiversity of its islands and that with the declaration of Recif Island as a reserve, the country is coming close to meeting its 50% target to make half of all Seychelles land area protected under law as nature reserves.

Recif covers an area of 13,2 hectares and provides a natural habitat for ground-nesting seabirds. In 2010, Silhouette Island was also designated as a national park.
