The City of Cape Town’s Transport and Urban Development Authority recently commenced the resurfacing of a 300-metre stretch of the Fish Hoek Promenade.
The upgrades will take place between The Galley restaurant and the lighthouse in Fish Hoek.
The work is scheduled to take three months, and should be complete by September if all goes according to plan.
The work entails the resurfacing of the main promenade and cross-paths, the installation of new benches and upgrading of the drainage at the railway subway at the end of Jaggers Walk.
Some storm water drainage will also be improved.
According to the City of Cape Town, the work has little impact on the traffic in the area and is being implemented in phases.
Areas where work is not actively taking place will be opened to the public to allow visitors to access the beach.
The City said in a statement: “The upgrade is a long overdue repair and improvement to the run-down and tatty beachfront infrastructure that will benefit all visitors to Fish Hoek Beach and was identified by the newly created Coastal Management Branch as a project that would deliver significant benefits to the area.”
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Area South, Councillor Eddie Andrews, says: “I am excited to see the start of this project, which is set to encourage the optimal use of the walkway, and which will enhance visitors’ experience of the surrounding area. As the walking surface will be improved, it will also add to the safety and enjoyment of visitors of all ages and abilities.”
