The Mzimkulu Vulture Hide in Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), will reopen on August 1. It was closed as a precautionary measure in response to the regional outbreak of foot and mouth disease.
Although white vultures are not affected by foot and mouth disease, the hide is situated on a working farm that supports livestock. Due to the precautionary measures and broader community efforts to prevent further spread of the disease, all bookings and visitor access were temporarily suspended.
Located 8km outside Underberg, at the foot of the Maloti-Drakensberg World Heritage Site, the Mzimkulu Vulture Hide is a purpose-built structure offering guests, including photographers, a rare, eye-level encounter with endangered Cape and bearded vultures.
It is also a vulture safe feeding site where uncontaminated carcasses are intentionally placed, as a sustainable supplementary food source, to mitigate food shortages leading to vulture population decline.
