Cycle Malawi has launched the 9 Day Lake of Stars Cycle Tour 2018, incorporating the country’s remote countryside and Lake of Stars 2018, a three-day festival of arts, music and lakeside activities.
The tour will take place from September 23 until October 1.
Cyclists cover a distance of 245 kilometres, departing Lilongwe, riding across the central region of Malawi’s remote countryside, visiting villages, cultural heritage sites and a wildlife reserve before reaching the shores of Leopard Bay, Lake Malawi, to enjoy the three-day festival.
Some of the highlights during the nine-day tour include a visit to Nkhoma Mission in Lilongwe, which was started in 1897 by the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa; Dedza Pottery, situated in the highest town in Malawi, known for its handmade pottery; Kungoni Cultural Centre, which overlooks the Madzipokwe River and is a short distance from the Chamare Museum, Art Gallery and Showroom; Kuti Wildlife Reserve, a 2000-hectare reserve outside Salima; and Leopard Bay, for the Lake of Stars 2018 festival.
Both local and international artists are set to feature at the Lake of Stars 2018 festival. In addition, a variety of market stands, art displays and exhibitions, as well as beach activities will take place during the festival.

Kabumba Hotel is in the foothills of Leopard Bay, situated on a stretch of beachfront, with a bar and views of Lake Malawi.
Dean Glossop, Tour Co-Ordinator at Cycle Malawi said the tour could accommodate 16 people. “We prefer to keep the cycling to groups of between four and eight, with a minimum of two people required for departure,” added Glossop.
Included in the tour is a three-day festival ticket pass, mountain bike rental, a goodie bag on arrival, vehicle support, an English-speaking tourist guide, accommodation, all meals, bottled water and snacks, park fees, taxes and levies, as well as bank/credit card charges.
