Ebola fears extend beyond hotspots

Almost half of respondents to last week’s Tourism Update poll said clients are asking about Ebola even when travelling to destinations far away from outbreak zones.

Of the 110 respondents, 48% said travellers are raising concerns regardless of their destination while 26% said questions are limited to destinations near outbreak areas. Another 26% said clients are not asking about Ebola risk at all.

Does ownership matter?

A recent Tourism Update article examined the meaning of “boutique” hospitality as major hotel groups expand into Africa’s safari sector. While boutique was once closely associated with independent ownership, industry leaders suggest the term is increasingly being used to describe an aesthetic rather than an ownership model. 

The article also questioned whether travellers care who owns a property or whether factors such as authenticity, guiding quality, conservation impact and the overall guest experience are more important in decision-making.
