A sporting facility has been earmarked in Victoria Falls, with Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Prisca Mupfumira, confirming that there is “a serious proposal for a Grand Prix facility. We are confident that Grand Prix will be coming to Zimbabwe,” she said.
It is reported that a foreign investor is in talks with the Government of Zimbabwe for the construction of the Grand Prix stadium in the resort town, which is already home to two major international sporting events – the Kwese Victoria Falls Sevens Rugby and the Victoria Falls Marathon.
The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) has said that it is receiving requests from reputable business personalities and companies who are interested in constructing a sports infrastructure, which is aimed at attracting sports enthusiasts and travellers from around the globe.
Investment proposals had been lined up, said the ZTA’s Head of Planning and Investment Promotion, Reason Machigere. “We also anticipate that there would be golf courses or amusement parks and like facilities that draw multitudes of tourists.”
Machigere continued: “This is the right time to think outside the box and repackage our products. The tourism industry has to understand the needs of travellers, get to know how other destinations are marketed, and always be in sync with global trends. We would want to host conferences of over 5 000 delegates, but now we cannot have that. There is, however, a positive development as we want to encourage new product packages.”
