ROAR Africa will launch its inaugural Flavors of a Rainbow Nation foodie expedition in October.
The culinary and cultural adventure, taking place from October 27 to November 5, is a collaboration between Deborah Calmeyer, CEO and founder of ROAR Africa, and chef Dan Kluger, owner of Loring Place restaurant in New York and the driving force behind Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s restaurants, ABC Kitchen and ABC Cocina.
“The South African food scene is surging, and most of my guests comment that they never expected such incredible food. Hence I decided that having a celebrity New York chef (Dan Kluger) co-host a trip experiencing the South African food scene, would be something very enlightening and could provide a platform for sharing both local and international tastes,” says Calmeyer.
Flavors of a Rainbow Nation is described as “a carefully-curated gastronomic adventure, where we will reveal our insider’s guide to the city’s best food markets, artisanal stores, delicatessens, restaurants, cafes, cocktail bars and breweries, allowing you to soak up the unique cultural experiences, influences, and inspirations that make this city the foodie capital of Africa”.
Kicking off in the city centre, guests will gain access to the kitchens of some of the city’s top chefs, including dinner with Luke Dale Roberts of the famed Test Kitchen restaurant. “We will visit the gardens of the farms that serve the city’s burgeoning farm-to-table philosophy, and we will visit the artisanal producers and green markets that keep the food economy going,” says Calmeyer.
Food tourism is a burgeoning sector in South Africa, as traditional flavours from the multi-cultural country start standing on their own as signature culinary offerings from the southern-most part of the continent.
