Industry reluctant to use SAA

With SAA starting to ramp up its operations again, Tourism Update readers have expressed reluctance to use the airline for future bookings.

Responding to our poll question about whether they would book SAA again if the airline services the relevant routes, 49% of readers said ‘no’, while 27% were ‘uncertain’. A total of 24% of respondents said they would use the national carrier again.

On Friday, May 5, the airline said significant fleet expansion had been given the go-ahead by government. Interim CEO, Professor John Lamola, said the airline would lease six new aircraft, with the intention of relaunching overseas routes and increasing seat capacity on regional and domestic routes. The first overseas route is expected to be between Johannesburg and São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport, Brazil.
