Mombo camps get a makeover

Wilderness Safaris’ flagship camps, Mombo and Little Mombo in the Okavango Delta have reopened after being rebuilt.

Each tented suite has its own entrance, sitting room with a bar, separate bedroom and bathroom areas with a dressing area, indoor and outdoor showers, double vanity and a separate toilet.

The decks have private plunge pools and swing beds that overlook the Delta.

New central fireplaces have been introduced at both camp, and Mombo has added a lap pool.

“We have taken the lessons we’ve learnt over the years and used innovative ideas to allow for natural temperature regulation. Extended verandas are shaded with pergolas in front of the rooms, while the multi-layered, insulated roof design consists of a fabric layer that deals well with heat and UV rays and a cavity roof with insulation that allows air flow through and drops the temperature,” says Kim Nixon, Wilderness Safaris Botswana MD.

New Chef

Johan Van Schalkwyk is the new Executive Chef at Mombo. He has 25 years’ experience in the hospitality industry and previously worked for Diemersfontein, Constania Uitsig and was head chef at Chateau Bellenau in France.

Van Schalkwyk has included more traditional Botswanan fare into the menu, as well as interactive meals such as cooking over coals, cooking demonstrations and cooking lessons.

Linda Van Rensburg, Wilderness Safaris Group Food Experience Manager, says: “Guests come to Botswana primarily to see wildlife and to spend time in the wilderness, which is why we will be placing more emphasis on our out-of-camp dining experiences so that guests can spend as much time out in the bush as possible, enjoying excellent food in nature – if they so wish.”
