New Tourist Information Centre opens in Mombasa

Kenya’s Tourism Ministry has launched a new information centre in Mombasa.

Kenya has launched a one-stop Tourist Information Centre in Mombasa. The centre was launched on June 21 by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala and will serve as a central point for tourists to get information about the coastal region.

Balala said the location of the centre, at the entry to the city, meant it would be the first port of call for new arrivals. It is a partnership between the Kenya Tourism Board and the Kenya Coast Tourist Association.

At the launch, Balala made further announcements regarding the coastal region. “We are currently working to develop the Mama Ngina Drive as the Mama Ngina Water Front. We are also working to see how best we can landscape the Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach so that our visitors can have proper facilities like toilets, restaurants and safety measures like a fire brigade.”

Balala also said the government was looking at installing lighting on the beaches so that hotels could use them for events at night.

In northern Mombasa, the ministry, together with Kenya Wildlife Services, has rolled out plans to clean the beaches. “We have hired casual labourers who have cleaned the beaches from Shanzu to English Point Marina,” Balala explained.
