Rwanda secures ecosystem restoration grant

Rwanda will receive a US$9 million grant from the Global Environment Facility to support ecosystem restoration and climate resilience in the Nyungwe-Ruhango Corridor. The project will be implemented by the Rwanda Environment Management Authority with technical support from the World Bank.

Implementation is expected to begin in August 2025, targeting key districts in Rwanda’s Southern Province including Ruhango, Nyanza and Nyamagabe.

Using a landscape-based approach, the project will address environmental degradation, food insecurity and climate-related disasters such as floods and landslides.

According to the World Bank, the project will:

  • Rehabilitate 2 162 hectares of degraded forests and wetlands
  • Promote sustainable land management practices on 8 931 hectares of farmland
  • Support income-generating activities to reduce ecosystem pressure
  • Directly benefit over 289 000 people

“This project reflects the strong partnership between the World Bank and the government of Rwanda in building climate resilience and driving inclusive green growth,” said Sahr Kpundeh, World Bank Country Manager for Rwanda.

The project is expected to create over 2 200 jobs through interventions such as the development of non-timber forest product value chains, fruit tree planting and support for green enterprises. It also aims to engage the private sector in climate-smart land use and forest management.
