ETA success: ‘Too soon to say’

Tourism Update readers have yet to see widespread client uptake of South Africa’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) pilot. Most respondents (72%) to our recent poll said they have not seen travellers using the system yet. 

While a small share reported smooth experiences (15%) and others flagged significant problems (13%), the results suggest it is still too early for the industry to assess how reliably the system is functioning in practice.

What’s driving the missing middle?

Industry debate around the “missing middle” accommodation segment continues with some stakeholders arguing that mid-market supply hasn’t disappeared but has instead been squeezed out by years of investment prioritising luxury development. Others point to rising operating costs and geographic concentration as key constraints.
