Industry split on backing sustainability with evidence

The results of our latest poll indicate an equal split between tourism businesses that are able to back up their sustainability claims with verifiable evidence and those that can’t.

In light of stricter regulations that guard against greenwashing, Tourism Update asked readers whether they are able to support the sustainability of their tourism businesses with scientific evidence and independent third-party audits. Exactly 50% of respondents answered “Yes” while 50% answered “No”.

In a recent column, Sustainability Consultant Melissa Foley said the majority of properties do not have internationally recognised third-party sustainability certifications.

“The messaging is polished, the visuals are stunning and the words “authentic”, “impact” and “responsible” appear often but none of it is verifiable,” Foley said.

Do guides require more support?

Tourist and safari guides often have to contend with long working hours, demanding expectations from clients and unexpected duties that go beyond the stated job scope.

Considering the integral role that guides play in delivering experiences to tourists, there are arguments that these professionals don’t get the necessary support needed to manage the stresses of the job and prevent burnout.
