It is expected that the completion of Dongo Kundu bypass, which connects Mombasa to Kenya’s South Coast, and the expansion of the Ukunda Airstrip, will open up business and tourism in the county of Kwale.
The work on both is expected to be completed within the next two years.
Diani Reef Hotel Managing Director, Boby Kamani has said the completion of the two developments is significant for Kwale County as an international tourism destination, reports Capital FM’s Margaret Njugunah.
Currently tourists have to first pass through the Likoni ferry crossing channel, or opt for local flights to access the destination.
Completion of the second and third phases of the bypass will allow tourists to skip the Likoni ferry, with the advantage of reaching Moi International Airport on time.
On the sidelines of the three-day symposium, organised by the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers at White Sands Hotel on Thursday (June 21), Kamani commented: “We have already started seeing more business just after the completion of first phase of Dongo Kundu.”
The expansion of Ukunda Airstrip will allow larger aircraft and international flights to start operating in the region.
"Ukunda Airstrip is something that we have been talking about for quite some time. We are now hoping the expansion of the airstrip will take about two years," said Kamani.
The development is part of the government’s initiative to add value to the coastal region as a tourism destination.
