The results of our latest poll indicate widespread agreement that mandatory travel insurance – such as implemented by Zanzibar and proposed for Tanzania – acts as a major deterrent for travellers to Africa.
Over half (57%) of poll respondents said mandatory insurance acts as a major deterrent and 29% said it doesn’t. The remaining 14% of respondents were “Unsure”.
Introduced last year, Zanzibar’s US$44 mandatory travel insurance was greeted with disappointment by inbound operators. Mainland Tanzania’s plans to introduce a US$44 insurance, highlighted in the country’s 2025/26 fiscal budget, have similarly drawn the ire of tourism stakeholders.
