Mixed feedback on Indaba 2025

The results of our latest poll illustrate a mixed industry response to the quality of this year’s recently concluded Africa’s Travel Indaba (ATI). Of respondents to the poll, 38% said ATI 2025 was better than last year’s event while 34% of respondents said the event was worse than last year. The remaining 28% said the quality of the show was “About the same” as last year.

The results reflect the mixed feedback Tourism Update has received from exhibitors, as highlighted in our article published on Monday, May 26.

Global hotels in the safari sector: Help or harm?

The increasing presence of global hotel brands in Southern and East Africa’s safari sector is raising discussions on the impacts posed to the authenticity, eco-tourism allure and true sustainability central to the safari experience.

As touched on in our Safari Ideas Feature, the presence of large hotel brands could pose a threat to independent lodges with long-established sustainability and conservation credentials linked to a deep awareness of the complexities of African eco-tourism models.

These potential impacts do, however, need to be weighed against the benefits that large new properties have for job creation and economic empowerment. What are your thoughts?
