Volcanoes Safaris’ Mount Gahinga Lodge in Uganda, unveiled its new deluxe room in August – the Moman Banda. It marks the centenary of Kuldip Rai Moman’s birth, father of founder of Volcanoes Safaris, Praveen Moman.

The new deluxe room is decorated in colourful crafts handmade by the Batwa women at the nearby Volcanoes Batwa Vocational Centre.

The earthy natural tones complement the locally made furniture and the Ugandan handwoven textiles.

In addition, from October the lodge will have a direct private footpath to the entrance of the Mgahinga National Park.

Praveen Moman first walked near Gahinga in 1966 at the age of 12. Over 30 years later, in 1997 he returned to the region to rebuild gorilla tourism and the following year started to build Mount Gahinga Lodge.

Today, the lodge symbolises the connection of Volcanoes lodges with communities and conservation, and is an ideal base for gorilla tracking, to track the rare golden monkey, climb a volcano, walk through local villages and share the culture of the Batwa.

In May, Volcanoes Safaris launched the Gahinga Batwa Village, a permanent settlement for over 100 members of the Gahinga Batwa community.
