MTPA CEO resigns following disciplinary process

Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) CEO Mduduzi Vilakazi has resigned with immediate effect, following the start of a disciplinary hearing. His resignation, effective November 3, follows a period of precautionary suspension, according to the agency’s interim Board.

Speaking to Tourism Update, Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism CEO Linda Grimbeek said the resignation marks a necessary step forward for the sector. “We are happy that the process is concluded and that we can now look forward to a sustainable future at MTPA. There’s been too much change of hands in leadership there and we hope that this will be the beginning of stabilisation.”

Grimbeek said prolonged leadership instability at MTPA had a “big” impact on the sector, noting that the provincial tourism Think Tank had not met for four years due to lack of participation by the agency. “MTPA is a key player in the industry and, if it does not come to the table, then basically no one else does.”

She confirmed the Think Tank convened again recently for the first time since 2021, calling it a crucial step ahead of the festive season.

On member concerns, Grimbeek said past issues included neglect at attractions and reserves, which were “well documented”, as well as allegations of corruption that were referred for investigation. She noted fewer complaints in recent weeks and signs of improvement although she had not yet assessed the sites first-hand.

Grimbeek said stakeholders now look to the MEC for a permanent appointment. “What we would like to see is that there is a permanent appointment as soon as possible.”

Commenting on investment confidence, Grimbeek highlighted the need for sustained leadership. “Stability is probably at the top of the list. We’ve had only one CEO that worked a full term of five years. We really need to show that the entity is stable and well-managed before we look at investors and long-term commitment.”

With major attractions under government management, she said this makes stability at MTPA even more critical for the province’s competitiveness.

Lemmy Mdluli continues as the Acting CEO of the entity.
