Infrastructure and service delivery failures in Dullstroom are placing increasing pressure on tourism businesses, forcing operators to invest in private solutions to maintain service standards and protect the destination’s reputation.
Speaking to Tourism Update, Walkersons Hotel & Spa CEO Alexander Band said hospitality businesses are increasingly devoting time, management attention and financial resources to challenges that traditionally fall within the scope of municipal delivery.
“Like many hospitality businesses in South Africa, we have to make significant investments in backup systems and operational contingencies to protect the guest experience as far as possible,” said Band.
Deteriorating road and broader municipal shortcomings could negatively affect visitors’ first impressions of the destination and increase operating costs, he added.
According to Daily Investor, community members have launched initiatives such as Drive Dullstroom’s Destiny to help maintain the town, citing ongoing service delivery failures by Emakhazeni Municipality.
Despite the challenges, Band said Dullstroom remains a strong tourism destination with enduring appeal.
However, he warned that unresolved infrastructure issues could affect the town’s long-term competitiveness.
“Tourism is highly competitive and travellers increasingly expect destinations to be safe, clean, functional and well-maintained. Over the long term, unresolved infrastructure challenges can place pressure on destination competitiveness and investor confidence.
“Tourism businesses, community stakeholders and government all have a shared interest in protecting the long-term sustainability and reputation of destinations like Dullstroom. Open communication, practical cooperation and proactive planning are essential.”
