Readers say: ‘Tackle crime and infrastructure’

Tourism Update readers have identified combatting crime and infrastructure challenges as a top focus area for South Africa to drive arrivals.

The largest proportion (42.9%) of respondents to our latest poll chose this option as the most urgent priority to address. This was followed by stronger global destination marketing – with 25.2% of the vote – and positioning tourism at the centre of economic growth at 17.6%.

Improved air access was selected by 11.8% of respondents while the development of innovative tourism products secured just 2.5% of votes.

South Africa’s latest inbound stats from Statistics South Africa show a more than 25% surge in year-on-year arrivals of overseas visitors in August. Major European source markets such as the UK (28.9% growth), Germany (33.9% growth) and France (18.3% growth) performed particularly strongly and were supported by a 63% surge from Central and South America, 38% growth from Australasia and an 82% increase from the Middle East.
