SANParks has begun work on its road upgrades project at Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site in Limpopo.
The upgrades aim to improve access to one of the park’s main heritage interpretation sites as well as the visitor experience and operational response capacity, including anti-poaching.
SANParks received a grant of €600 000 (US$695 400) for the initiative, which includes upgrading key road infrastructure and procuring two vehicles to support daily operations such as law enforcement and anti-poaching patrols.
The project is funded through the SADC Transfrontier Conservation Areas Financing Facility, with support from the government of Germany under the KfW Development Bank, and is implemented in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
