Beyond Phinda Vlei Lodge has reopened following a complete refurbishment that has expanded its suites, refreshed its guest areas and introduced new design and sustainability features.

The lodge reopened in July between sand forest and a wetland, or vlei, within the nearly 30 000 ha &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal.

Phinda Vlei retains its six-suite configuration with each thatched suite now extended to provide larger bedrooms and sitting areas opening on to private salas and decks overlooking the wetland. Each 173 square metre suite also has a private pool, separate dressing room, personal bar and coffee station and bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers.

The main guest areas have been redesigned to improve the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces and a new library has been added.

Sustainability measures introduced during the refurbishment include Forest Stewardship Council-certified hardwoods for flooring, decking and cladding as well as reduced thatch coverage to improve insulation and energy efficiency.

“Spaces draw guests outdoors and keep them connected to the landscape while wildlife continues to arrive and pass through. The safari does not end when the game drive does,” says Brendan Streak, &Beyond MD for South Africa Lodges.

The lodge welcomes guests aged 12 and older.
