THE 15-day Union Limited Maluti Tour - which runs once a year during August - has proved so popular among international guests that next year the tour will run twice.
The Union Limited Steam train, owned and operated by the Transnet Heritage Foundation, will run the Maluti Tour from July 29 to August 12 and again from August 19 to September 2 to accommodate passengers who, according to Union Ltd spokesperson, Ian Pretorius, have been trying unsuccessfully for three years to book this trip.
Pretorius says the safari trip starts and ends in Cape Town but covers parts of the Western Cape, the Garden Route, Karoo, Northern Cape and the Free State, including stops in Worcester, Swellendam, Hartenbos, George, Knysna, Graaff Reinet, Colesberg, Bloemfontein and Bethlehem.
For those who have slightly less time on their hands, but would still like to see parts of the Garden Route and the Karoo, the six-day Union Limited Golden Thread Tour is a popular option.
Leaving Cape Town on a Tuesday and returning on Monday, the train travels through the splendours of Paarl Valley and Worcester to Ashton where passengers enjoy a traditional South African barbeque and a wine tasting at Van Loveren Estate.
The train travels through the wheatlands of the Southern Cape to Hartenbos, continuing via George to Oudtshoorn and Knysna, retracing its tracks via George and Hartenbos back to Cape Town.
Passengers have numerous opportunities to get off the train and explore their surroundings at the stops made, including special excursions to the Cango Wildlife Ranch and the Ostrich Farm.
All tours are done with standard vintage first-class accommodation, two in a four-berth or one in a two-berth in air-conditioned, en-suite facilities.
