Air Malawi in voluntary liquidation

Air Malawi has entered voluntary liquidation, the appointed liquidator for the airline has confirmed. The decision was made following a decision by the Malawi government to restructure the airline.

The appointed liquidator, Lekani Katandula, will be responsible for handling all claims or debts of the airline as at November 14.

A consultant has also been appointed to handle the process of identifying a strategic partner for the airline. The government has decided to continue the airline’s operations until a strategic partner has been identified to take over 49% of Air Malawi’s shares.

A statement issued by Katandula said: “It is the intention of the government of Malawi to let Air Malawi continue its operations under the liquidator. This means all operations and other business partners, will continue to transact with the company under my mandate as the liquidator of Air Malawi Limited. This should give assurance to all our trade partners to continue rendering the necessary services to our airline.”

The government of Malawi as the sole shareholder of the airline has also undertaken a guarantee to clear all bills incurred by the airline until the commencement of liquidation. Any subsequent debts will be paid from funds generated by the on-going operations.
