All systems go for Indaba 2004

INDABA is on track to becoming one of the top three must-visit travel trade shows in the world. So said SA Tourism coo, Moeketsi Mosola, at a media briefing held in Johannesburg on May 4. Speaking to the press in the run-up to Indaba 2004, Mosola highlighted some of the key events to be held this year: the unveiling of the new South African brand, which is expected to position South Africa in a new way; the launch of the annual Eteya Awards for 2004; the Fundi expert course, of interest to the international trade; the launch of the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa directory and the domestic growth strategy, which will be launched on May 9. Indaba 2004 will also serve as the international tourism launchpad for Minister van Schalkwyk, South Africa's new tourism minister, who will be present for much of the four-day trade event. On the success of the event, Mosola said visitor applications have increased in excess of 25% over the last year to about 3 500 from 93 countries, including those from 15 new countries. The total number of exhibitors is also reported to be the largest ever at 1 616, including 588 previously disadvantaged individuals. The growth in numbers, says Dr. Tanya Abrahamse, executive director of the Tourism Business Council of South Africa, is an indication of the excitement that has been shown about South Africa as a destination. "Indaba," she says, "is placing South Africa as a competitive destination." (Natalia Thomson)
