Ambitious plans for Spier golf course

THE Village at Spier hotel in Stellenbosch, which was planning to build its own golf course, has purchased the adjacent 18-hole course, Klein de Zalza, and renamed it the Spier Country Club. This is also the site upon which the new Ritz Carlton - which opens in 2003 - will be constructed, says Spier's sales manager, Sian Neubert. The Spier Country Club is a contender for several international golfing events, having narrowly missed the bid for the 2002 Presidents Cup, which was awarded to Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate. What makes this course unique is that its 19th hole is situated in a working wine cellar. Neubert told TNN that Spier is also planning to build a PGA championship course, designed by golf legend Trevor Jones. (Adéle Mackenzie)
