THERE has been quite a bit of movement in the Timeless Afrika region of KwaZulu Natal (KZN), including the opening of a new lodge near the battlefields of Rorke's Drift, a mountain retreat and hiking trail and a new birding guide.
Zulu Wings Lodge - located 17km from Dundee on the Nqutu R68 road near three world-famous battlefields sites, Rorke's Drift, Isandlwana and Blood River - is a new four-bedroom property offering game viewing, horse trails and walks.
Furthermore, the Vergezient mountain retreat and hiking trail was recently launched as part of the Jacana Collection of Trails and Accommodation.
The farm - situated on the Free State/KZN escarpment west of Retief Pass - is the site of San rock paintings, small game, an abundance of birdlife and offers a variety of hiking and accommodation options for up to 32 people at its base camp. Other accommodation facilities include rustic facilities in an old schoolhouse and in the self-contained Fraai Uitzicht cottage.
Lastly, the Zululand Birding Route has launched its user-friendly guide to bird watching in the north-eastern region of KZN. The guide is in the form of a fold-out map which identifies six birding areas covering approximately 22 major birding sites.
