CHERYL Carolus, ceo of South African Tourism, has decided not to extend her three-year contract, which expires at the end of October, according to Rick Menell, chairman of the SA Tourism board. “It is with regret that we have accepted this decision,” said Menell. “Cheryl has made a tremendous contribution during the rebuilding phase at South African Tourism. I have no doubt that we can find a leader to succeed her who will make an equally strong contribution during the next phase of the organisation’s growth.” According to SA Tourism, between now and Carolus’ departure on November 1, the board be involved in the process of appointing her successor. “In the interim,” stressed Menell, “it’s most definitely business as usual.” Carolus took up her three-year term as ceo in November 2001, immediately prior to which she was South African High Commissioner to London, a post she assumed in March 1998. In commenting on her decision, Carolus said that she has never made any secret of the fact that she is a ‘frontiers’ person’. “South African Tourism is now in a very good space and I feel I have achieved what I set out to do, so it is time to move on. I have no current plans except to take some time out - and then see what 2005 brings,” said Carolus. (Lucy Siebert)
