DIA airport upgrade delay

THE construction break over the festive season caused a slight delay on the planned December opening of Phase One of the R105 million upgrade on Durban International Airport, with its opening scheduled for January 30.
Airport manager, Siva Pillay, told Travel Now on Wednesday that a site visit had revealed that everything was "looking good" with final touches still being done "here and there".
Upgrades to Phase One included numerous entrances, a new departures hall, a newly refurbished external facade, check-in counters for Nationwide and British Airways (South African Airways' check-in counters will take a "little longer" as they have more counters) and an airport lounge.
Pillay says the final upgrades will be completed on time for the scheduled July 2001 opening.
He also told Travel Now that negotiations with a well-known United Kingdom charter company were back on track and "going well". He also plans to focus on bringing charter tours in from sub-Saharan Africa and has begun discussions with the relevant stakeholders..
