MPUMALANGA'S axed tourism chief Elliot Ndala has been quietly awarded a R1,5m golden handshake despite failing to do his job. Ndala was fired as Mpumalanga Tourism Authority (MTA) chief executive last month after spending a full year on paid suspension for repeatedly failing to meet deadlines, delivering sub-standard work, and failing to adequately represent the province's tourism industry. An internal disciplinary tribunal, assisted by independent specialists, found that Ndala did not have the necessary technical skills to meet his contractual obligations and was unlikely to be able to acquire the skills. The tribunal delivered its verdict last year, and had its recommendations ratified by the MTA board in December 2003. "The dismissal only became final after we agreed to pay Ndala out for the nine months still remaining on his contract. The R1,5m is well worth it just to get rid of him," said MTA board chairman Fikile Mdlalose. "We have finally closed a very painful chapter, and we can now get on with rebuilding the MTA."
