The decision to reclassify tourism activities and transfers from zero-rated to a standard 15.5% VAT rate is placing some operators under pressure, as reported by Tourism Update last week.
An overwhelming 79% of readers said these tourism services should have remained exempt from VAT in order to protect competitiveness. Just 19% said the VAT parity is fair while the remaining 2% are “Unsure”.
Is car rental doing enough for motorist safety in CPT?
Following ongoing concerns about the safety of motorists travelling to and from Cape Town International Airport, some sectors of the tourism industry have argued that car rental companies are not doing enough to caution drivers about routes with higher crime risks.
“The big gap here, and in my opinion a glaring and lamentable weakness, is the lack of initiative and cooperation from the car rental companies,” commented SATSA Transport Committee Chair Onne Vegter in response to a Tourism Update article last week.
“Why does every single rental car not have smash and grab fitted automatically? It should be a requirement for rental cars to be fitted with smash and grab. Why do rental agencies provide no guidance or safety tips for international visitors upon arrival? In my view, the car rental agencies are derelict in their moral obligation to help fight this and keep their customers safe,” Vegter added.
We would love to get your view on the issue.
