THE US PGA (Professional Golfers' Association) Tour commissioner, Tim Finchem, has announced that the 2002 President's Cup will take place at the Links Golf Course at Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate outside George in the Western Cape.
Says Finchem: "We are pleased to take the President's Cup to South Africa in 2002 since one of our goals is to make the tournament a truly international competition, and by taking it around the world, we introduce the sport to new generations of fans."
South Africa's Minister of Sport, Ngconde Balfour, accepted the President's Cup Charter at the closing ceremony of the tournament which ended on Sunday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia, USA.
"We humbly accept the challenge and, on behalf of all South Africans, I pledge that we will host an event that will make the global golfing fraternity proud," said Balfour.
He added: "We are conscious of the impact that the staging of the President's Cup will have on factors such as viewership, corporate sponsorship and international relations. We therefore feel honoured that the world's best golfers will grace us with their presence at the beautiful Links Golf Course at Fancourt."
The fifth President's Cup in 2002 will be contested outside the United States for the second time. It was held at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia in 1998. The event will feature many of the world's best golfers with 12 representing the US and 12 making up the international team of players from around the world (excluding Europe) in team, match-play competition.
