JOHANNESBURG’S distinctive landmark, the Hillbrow Tower, was renamed on May 31 to Telkom Joburg Tower. The 270-metre structure is now ‘sponsored’ by Telkom, South Africa’s telecommunications parastatal, which includes the company’s branding appearing at the top of the tower as well as it being lit in blue. “Although it has always been known as the Hillbrow Tower, we are also aware that there was an official name (JG Strijdom Tower) which reflects the city’s past. We are therefore delighted Telkom decided to rename and rebrand the tower to include Joburg as part of the name and the branding,” said Joburg councillor, Sol Cowan. As part of the renaming, the Tower has undergone renovations. Cowan said that as part of the revamp, there are plans to open the revolving restaurant at the top of the tower. He added that the renovations will have a big boost for the city’s residents and visitors. (Darren Sandras)
