KZN buffalo tested for disease

THE buffalo herds of the Ithala Game Reserve in northern KwaZulu Natal are currently being assessed to determine their disease status. This is part of the on-going programme to determine the disease status of Cape buffalos in various protected areas managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. The Ithala Game Reserve buffalo herds have been built up from sources widely accepted as being ‘disease-free’ but to confirm this status, the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Game Capture Unit and veterinarian Dr Dave Cooper are working with state veterinary departments to thoroughly test the herds. If the results show the animals are disease-free, a percentage of Ithala buffalo will be made available for sale at the annual Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Game Auction in June. (Lucy Siebert)
