Letter to the Editor: Zim will benefit if SA borders stay closed

Zimbabwe is opening Victoria Falls and Hwange National Park very soon – most probably July – writes a Tourism Update reader, known only as Sando, in response to the article about the industry lobbying for government to open up South Africa’s tourism industry by latest September this year.

“Since they upgraded Vic Falls airport it can now accommodate very large long-haul planes so passengers do not need to land at Harare or Johannesburg first.

My point being that Vic Falls has always been packaged as one of the sites to visit after a tour in South Africa.

Hwange has the same wildlife as Kruger and once the market realises that one can visit the Falls and still experience the same wildlife as Kruger it will greatly reduce the number of tourists going to South Africa for the Big Five in the long run.

Do not forget that even if Zimbabwe has bad publicity, Victoria Falls offers a world-class experience and four countries meet at the tip of Zimbabwe. Opening South Africa’s borders late will be a huge blessing for Zimbabwe.”
