Microchips to help the fight against rhino poaching

On September 3 the Baobab Ridge hosted a conservation event at the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve (KPNR) with Wildcon Safaris and Events about the microchip technology that will track rhino poaching. Colin Rowles of the KPNR and Peter Rogers of Provet Wildlife Services were present at the event.

Wildcon has recently placed microchips in three additional white rhino females' horns and humps to deter poaching, bringing the total to 80 rhinos to have had microchips inserted. Ear notches have been made for visual identification purposes. The technology will show Wildcon if a rhino horn has been confiscated, if it came from the reserve, and the animal it came from.

The Baobab Ridge will continue to work with Wildcon in micro-chipping the remainder of the KPNR rhino population and to launch other conservation projects within the reserve.
