More delays for Robben Island ferry

WITH the peak summer season just around the corner, the Robben Island Museum (RIM) has yet to take delivery of its new ferry.

The new ferry which has the capacity to accommodate up to 300 passengers was first expected to arrive in March this year. According to Shalo Mbatha, RIM spokesperson, there is no specific date set for the arrival of the ferry but that it should be between January and February next year.

To cope with the large demand during the peak season, Mbatha says RIM is getting its older ferries serviced and new ones will be rented during this period.

This follows an announcement made to the National Assembly Portfolio Committee for Arts and Culture last week that the attraction had made a R25m loss for the past financial year, attributed to problems surrounding the ferries. Passenger numbers have had to be limited and the older equipment constantly maintained.
