The Two Oceans Aquarium in Caw Town will construct a new large-scale exhibit as part of a two-year development plan leading up to the twenty-first birthday of the Aquarium in 2016.
Renovations to the current I&J Predator Exhibit and the Ocean Basket Kelp Forest Exhibit are included in this plan.
“I am very excited because not only do we get a state-of-the-art new exhibit, but we’re also able to change our current predator exhibit into a dedicated large shark display. Given that sharks are one of our strongest draw cards, it will be fantastic to show our visitors different species of these impressive and majestic animals” said Dr. Pat Garratt, the Aquarium’s MD.
The new exhibit, being constructed on the parking lot between the existing Aquarium building and the One & Only Hotel will contain 1.5 million litres of seawater and will be six metres in depth. A single acrylic panel, supplied by Clax Italia in Italy and measuring 9m long and 4 metres wide, will provide a seamless window into the exhibit. Included in the exhibit is a 10m complete full tunnel. Some of the animals on display will possibly include spotted eagle rays, honeycomb rays, smooth hound and spotted gully sharks, two species of tuna and Yoshi the loggerhead turtle and Cannelloni the green turtle.
The Two Oceans Aquarium officially broke ground for its brand new large-scale exhibit on January 28, 2014 and hopes to open the display towards the end of the year.
The new will be completed by December 2014. The Aquarium remains fully operational during the construction and renovation period and will be open daily from 09h30 to 18h00, 365 days a year.
Tourism Update initially reported inaccurately that the new exhibit would be an outdoor exhibit. We apologise for the error.
