New camp opening in Liwonde

Robin Pope Safaris will open Miyala Camp in Liwonde National Park, Malawi, in July – bookings opened this week.

The camp takes its name from local Chichewa word for rocks – miyala. The natural hues of the rocks surrounding the camp have informed the décor choices.

Miyala is set in the suth of Liwonde National Park at the base of the Chiunguni Hill, with extensive views over the Chikalogwe plain and the meandering Shire River. It comprises four guest tents and has a maximum occupancy of 10.

Each modern safari tent includes an open-plan bedroom, lounge and bathroom, with a private viewing deck. The tents also feature an environment-friendly cooling system, freestanding baths and outdoor showers.

Activities will include morning and evening game drives, guided bush walks, hiking up Chiunguni Hill and walks through the mopani forests. Game sightings include, elephant, hippo, crocodile, Black rhinos, waterbuck, Yellow baboon and Vervet monkeys. Liwonde National Park is also renowned for its birdlife, and is home to 400 of Malawi’s bird species. Rarities include Livingstone’s Flycatcher, Pel’s Fishing-Owl, and the Brown-breasted Barbet.
